چکیده

Nodal signaling plays an essential role during the induction and patterning of vertebrate embryonic tissue types. In Xenopus and zebrafish, microRNAs regulate Nodal signaling, but surprisingly by very different mechanisms.

Noncoding RNAs and chronic inflammation: Micro‐managing the fire within

Inflammatory responses are essential for the clearance of pathogens and the repair of injured tissues; however, if these responses are not properly controlled chronic inflammation can occur. Chronic inflammation is now recognized as a contributing factor to many age-associated diseases including metabolic disorders, arthritis, neurodegeneration, and cardiovascular disease. Due to the connection...

Snail mediates medial-lateral patterning of the ascidian neural plate.

The ascidian neural plate exhibits a regular, grid-like arrangement of cells. Patterning of the neural plate across the medial-lateral axis is initiated by bilateral sources of Nodal signalling, such that Nodal signalling induces expression of lateral neural plate genes and represses expression of medial neural plate genes. One of the earliest lateral neural plate genes induced by Nodal signals...

Defective Nodal and Cerl2 expression in the Arl13b(hnn) mutant node underlie its heterotaxia.

Specification of the left-right axis during embryonic development is critical for the morphogenesis of asymmetric organs such as the heart, lungs, and stomach. The first known left-right asymmetry to occur in the mouse embryo is a leftward fluid flow in the node that is created by rotating cilia on the node surface. This flow is followed by asymmetric expression of Nodal and its inhibitor Cerl2...

RNA Processing and mRNA Surveillance in Monogenic Diabetes

In the eukaryotic cell a number of molecular mechanisms exist to regulate the nature and quantity of transcripts intended for translation. For monogenic diabetes an understanding of these processes is aiding scientists and clinicians in studying and managing this disease. Knowledge of RNA processing and mRNA surveillance pathways is helping to explain disease mechanisms, form genotype-phenotype...

Vertebrate Development: Taming the Nodal Waves

Recent results have provided evidence that regulatory loops operating in vertebrate embryos between the developmental signalling factors Nodal and Lefty may provide a real example of the kind of reaction-diffusion process long predicted to be a mechanism of pattern formation.
